JAMES

The moment I’m able to connect with Ryland again, I sigh. He’s annoying and frustrating, but he’s ours. Hmm, I think I’ll come back to that thought later. Best to focus on getting everyone back in the same location as quickly as possible.

I think about the path we took to get to Amber’s cabin and send him the directions. Once I’m sure he’s heading the right way, I explain to Luca that Garnet is talking to Ryland and that he’s on his way with Vincent in tow.

That means that half of our mission is complete. He saved Garnet’s brother. Now we just have to figure out how to save the rest of the wolves and the vampires who are being held here. I believe Amber when she says that she didn’t know about this, but it makes me wonder about her ability to lead her people if they refuse to follow the rules that she, along with the council, laid out for them.

Being part of that council, though, means I have to show her respect. And I will. But I will also protect my mate from any of the witches here, including Amber. That is the one thing I will not compromise on. Garnet’s safety is my number one priority.

I leave Luca to keep Garnet calm while she waits for Orym to get back with Ryland and Vincent. I should talk to Amber and find out exactly what’s going on here. I don’t know how we’re getting out of this territory, or if there will be repercussions for us being here at all.

I find her in the library, a small room off the kitchen with bookshelves lining the walls. She’s sitting on the floor with books spread out around her. There’s a notebook in her lap and she appears to be taking notes from four different books at once. “Is this a bad time?” I ask, startling her.

“Oh, James. You scared me a bit. Of course, please, have a seat and we can chat.” She gestures to a chair just inside the door. I step over her books and sit.

“What are you working on?” I glance over her and look at the books. Some of the pages are in English, but others are written in strange symbols that look a lot like what Garnet drew on Ryland’s wall.

“Well, with what just happened, I figured I should consult my tomes and see if there’s anything I can do to help. I meant it when I said that I didn’t know what was going on. Witch law is very cut and dried about this. I will issue a statement, and they will be compelled to return the people that have been taken. If they don’t comply, well, that’s what I’m looking at now. I need to know my options.” Her face looks pained, and I want to offer my help.

“Could this start a war?” I hate having that thought, but it’s echoed on her face.
